Nagano is the short version of the journey
Everything that makes the Tokyo day trip long happens before Nagano Station. Once you are standing at the East Exit, the park is close: the Nagaden Snow Monkey Express bus leaves from Bus Stop 23 and reaches Kanbayashi Onsen in about 40 to 45 minutes, and the Nagano Dentetsu line runs out to Yudanaka in about 45 minutes with a short local bus at the far end. That is why half-day tours from Nagano city exist at all, and why they can get you back in time for an evening train.
Nagaden also sells its own Snow Monkey Pass at ¥6,800 for an adult, which bundles the direct bus with park entry. It is a transport ticket rather than a tour, and it is worth pricing against a guided half day before you assume either is cheaper. The destination costs are set out here.
Coming from Shiga Kogen, Nozawa, Madarao or Myoko
On the map the ski areas look like neighbours, and in a straight line they are. By public transport they are not. The route from most of them is to come south or inward to Nagano first and then head back out to the valley, which turns a short hop into a two-legged morning with luggage. That single fact is why a vehicle that collects you at your accommodation is worth more from a ski base than it is from central Nagano, and why ski-area pickups tend to be their own category. Staying in Shibu Onsen and walking up early
Shibu Onsen is the closest town to the trailhead, a hot-spring town of wooden ryokan and public baths, and Yudanaka Onsen sits by the Dentetsu terminus. Sleeping at either end of the valley is the version of this trip I recommend to friends, because it puts you on the trail in the first hour of the day rather than in the middle of the bus arrivals. The baths there are for humans; the monkeys have their own pool and it was built for them, which is a rule and not a suggestion. The etiquette is worth reading before you go.
Winter opening is 9:00 to 16:00 from November to March and 8:30 to 17:00 from April to October, with no fixed closing days. Work backwards from 16:00 in January: the walk down is 30 to 35 minutes and the light goes early in a north-facing valley.
